Frequently Asked Questions

1. What type of business card should I choose for my business?

One way to make your card memorable is to have it reflect your business and be engaging. Depending on your line of work, and industry expectation, you may want to maintain a more traditional design. If you're selling a product, guide potential customers to your online shop, or display an image of the product with a brief description. The European standard business card size is 85mm x 55mm.

Make sure your card is scanner friendly and easy to read. Here are some other options to consider:

  • Don't place text over images, as this can be hard to read;
  • If included, keep images simple;
  • Avoid shading, italics, or underlining;
  • Use a clear and professional font such as Times New Roman, or Helvetica;
  • Make sure there's enough space between your contact information for legibility.

The same way you wouldn't walk into an important meeting without your best suit, you should make sure to avoid serious style mistakes in your business card's design. Here are some aesthetic choices to avoid:

  • Don't be Cheap: Having business cards that say 'printed free by XXX' looks unprofessional.
  • Being Unoriginal: Even if you don't have a big budget for your business card, avoid using a common template as it is less memorable and less effective.
  • Don't go for Shock Value: What you're trying to achieve is engagement and follow up. There is a different set of rules to follow for this.
  • Don't Laminate It: A surface on which the recipient of the card can write makes it easier for them to take notes and remember you better.
  • Don't Overcrowd It: Some people choose folded business cards in order to include some extra information. This is a good option instead of crowding too much information on a regular business card.

2. Which paper stock is the best choice for my business card?

When you choose paper stock, remember that you are not just choosing what your clients see or feel, you are choosing what kind of impact you want to make as a first impression. That's why most business card paper stocks should be taken into consideration when you want to print your cards.

We offer different types of paper:

  • Glossy card stock is the one to choose if you want a shiny and sleek look.
  • Matt card stock offers a silky and smooth surface without the shine. More subdued and dramatic.
  • Trifecta card stock, our premium triple-layered paper that is second to none. Available with a Red, Black, or Green middle layer to make the ultimate impression. Impressive thickness with a velvet finish, they are printed on 700 g (Red and Black layers) and 460 g for the Green layer.

Choose one of our best paper stocks and feel the difference.

3. How can I easily upload my own business card design?

With GotPrint it's easy to upload your new business card design. You can simply go to our Business Cards page and click on: "Upload Your Design". We accept files in the following formats: TIF, TIFF, PDF, EPS, AI, PSD, BMP, GIF, JPG, and PNG.

You can then choose the size, paper stock, colour options, and quantity you want.

Finally a quick and convenient option we provide is our Instant Online Proof, where you can see exactly how your business card will print before approving it.

If you prefer to have your card more closely inspected, choose the Manual Proof and one of our trained staff will check your file carefully for a small fee.

4. What is bleed?

Bleed is the portion of the product that will be trimmed off when it is cut to the final size.

We print your product on an oversized sheet that gets trimmed down, so it's required that the images extend beyond the trim zone/line. That extra margin is what we refer to as the bleed, and is used to guarantee that you don't have white edges on your product when it is trimmed to final size.

To ensure you submit your file(s) correctly, be sure to download our Templates as they are already set up with the needed guidelines.

5. Can I create my own business card from scratch?

Yes you can. For that we offer 2 easy options on our Business Cards page.

  • Quick Designer: With this, you will be able to choose from a library of pre-designed templates, customise the look, and just type in your information.
  • Advanced Designer: With this, you are able to create original designs like a professional with endless possibilities. Our free, custom program allows you to further design your product with the ability to freely move text, draw shapes, align images, create depth, and much more.

Both options allow you to choose either an Instant Online Proof or a Manually Processed Proof checked by one of our professionals.

7. Do you have professionals to check our business cards before sending to print?

We will check your files if you've selected the Manually Processed Proof option. Your file will be reviewed according to our guidelines and you'll need to approve the proof before your order is sent to press.

If you choose the Instant Online Proof option, your file will print as you see it on the screen. Bleed, trim, pixelation, and low resolution issues are still checked however.

At GotPrint we want to provide the best quality printing and keep our customers happy.

Normally our printing time is only 2 working days for 300 g Glossy 2 Sides + UV High Gloss Coating. Additional options may result in 1 additional working day. For any other paper stocks or options please see our Turnaround Times.

Depending from which country you are ordering, we accept Visa, Mastercard, Paypal and Maestro. We also accept Sofort and iDeal.

Maestro may not be available through all financial institutions. Should you encounter any billing problems using this method, please check with your bank to ensure that your card is authorised for this type of payment.

If your credit card is declined, this can be caused by either insufficient funds or a simple data entry error. If that happens, you promptly will receive an email to alert you.
